Premnas biaculeatus, commonly known as spine-cheeked anemonefish or the maroon clownfish, is a species of anemonefish found in the Indo-Pacific from western Indonesia to Taiwan and the Great Barrier Reef. They can grow up to be about 6.7 in. Like all anemonefishes it forms a symbiotic mutualism with sea anemones and is unaffected by the stinging tentacles of the host anemone. It is a sequential hermaphrodite with a strict size-based dominance hierarchy; the female is largest, the breeding male is second largest, and the male nonbreeders get progressively smaller as the hierarchy descends. They exhibit protandry, meaning the breeding male changes to female if the sole breeding female dies, with the largest nonbreeder becoming the breeding male. The fish's natural diet includes algae and zooplankton.

Amphiprion polymnus, also known as the saddleback clownfish or yellowfin anemonefish, is a black and white species of anemonefish with a distinctive saddle. Like all anemonefishes it forms a symbiotic mutualism with sea anemones and is unaffected by the stinging tentacles of the host anemone. It is a sequential hermaphrodite with a strict sized based dominance hierarchy: the female is largest, the breeding male is second largest, and the male non-breeders get progressively smaller as the hierarchy descends. They exhibit protandry, meaning the breeding male will change to female if the sole breeding female dies, with the largest non-breeder becomes the breeding male. A. polymnus is a small sized fish which grows up to 5.1 in.

The Black Ocellaris is a stunning color morph of A. ocellaris that is sometimes referred to as the Darwin Ocellaris or the Darwin False Percula. This is a naturally occurring variation for the species with a very limited range. It is naturally found in the Darwin area of Northern Australia. These fish are rarely, if ever imported from the wild so captive bred specimens make up nearly the entire market. Black Ocellaris begin life orange colored and switch to black as they mature. The ones we offer are generally all black but may have a splash of orange on the face. All orange color disappears as they age resulting in the only solid black and white clownfish found in nature. Scientists have considered describing the Black Ocellaris as a new species, but for now they are still considered a variation of the A. ocellaris species.

The unique Extreme Misbar Black Ocellaris has a lot less white than a Misbar Black. Some only have cheek dots and a saddle, others just a headbar or a chinstrap. These are some awesome one-of-a-kind clowns. They are by far the most difficult to produce as very few have these minimal white patterns. Each fish is selectively chosen to qualify as an Extreme Misbar, and availability is normally limited. This results in a very desirable and rare clownfish morph that would become the pride of any aquarium.

Like all clownfishes, Amphiprion ocellaris is a sequential hermaphrodite. The largest individual present will exert dominance and become reproductively female. The next largest fish will become reproductively male. Remaining smaller individuals are usually tolerated but will not be reproductively active.

The Clarkii Clownfish is a highly popular aquarium species. They are sometimes sold under the name of “Sebae Clownfish”, which is actually the species name of a very different clownfish. Full grown Clarkii Clownfish can reach a size of about 4 inches, and are territorial when full grown. This is a species easily cared for in aquariums and will accept a wide variety of foods. Most clownfish eat some algae in nature, and this should be included in their diet. Clarkii Clownfish are the most widely distributed anemonefish in the world, and show a large range of color variation. They occur from the Caroline Islands in the east, west to the Persian Gulf, north to Southern Japan and south to the New Hebrides. We grow two varieties of Clarkii clowns at ORA. One of the varieties originates from the Solomon Islands, and fish from this lineage develop dark black flanks that contrast their bright yellow fins. Clarkii are one of the least restrictive species when it comes to host anemones, and will associate with a variety of them. Clarkii regularly produce nests of over 1,000 eggs, as often as 3 times per month. Their eggs hatch in 7 to 9 days. It typically takes 4 months for a Clarkii clownfish to grow to a seller-sized individual.

The Fire Clownfish is a member of the Tomato Complex. Although juveniles have white lines on their heads, the adults completely lack a head bar. As they mature these fish will develop a dark saddle on each side of the body. Fire Clownfish are bold fish that rarely tolerate others invading their home territory or anemone. They are extremely hardy and reach a maximum size of around 4 inches when full grown. This species is found in the Indian Ocean and their nest size can range from 300 – 500 eggs.

All of the Maroon Clownfish sold at ORA are of the gold stripe variety. Normally, Maroon Clownfish vary in color from bright red to dark maroon with three narrow white stripes. The fish found in the area of Sumatra have gold colored stripes, and the ORA broodstock comes from this area. The gold color of the stripes typically does not develop until the fish are about 9 – 12 months old. ORA fish are shipped at about 6-7 months, so they are showing the juvenile white stripes. They will develop the gold color in time, starting with the head stripe. These very popular fish are easy to keep in aquariums, although they do not get along with each other. Unless a hobbyist can get a mated pair, it is best to keep them one to a tank. It has been observed that the gold stripe variety seems a little less aggressive than the White Striped variety. This is one of the largest clownfish species, adult females can attain a size of over 6 inches. This is a very long lived fish, ORA has had pairs that spawned for more than 35 years. With the aggressive female guarding her nest, and her much smaller male mate fanning the eggs, Maroon Clownfish have some of the largest spawns ever recorded for clownfish. Typical spawns may contain 1,500 eggs, and spawns of over 6,000 have been observed. This species also seems the most likely to show misbars, and has a higher percentage of incomplete striping than other species.

The Lightning Maroon is one of the most exciting naturally occurring designer clownfish to be discovered since the Picasso Percula of the early 2000s. These fish develop extraordinary stripes that seem to spill over their sides like lightning bolts. Their stripes are highly variable and can take on any number of attractive formations. As the fish matures and becomes darker in color, these patterns will also change and become more visually striking. The Lightning Maroon clownfish stem from the geographically distinct White Stripe variety of Premnas biaculeatus. Maroon clownfish females can reach sizes up to 6 inches! This is a fish best kept singly or in pairs with a dramatic size difference between the individuals.

The Extreme Misbar Ocellaris has even less white than the typical Misbar making this fish quite rare. Sometimes only having a head bar or a tail dot, some of the patterns on these fish are truly awesome and outrageous. They’re considered to be some of the most attractive and unique clownfish we offer. Extreme Misbar patterns are the least commonly observed stripe mutation, and for that reason are highly desirable but limited in quantity.

ORA Picassos are a highly sought after variant of the Percula Clownfish.  The Picasso variant occurs naturally in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea however they are exceptionally rare. ORA’s strain of Picassos originated in 2004 from a single wild male from the Solomon Islands, which we paired with a typical Onyx female. In subsequent years we have added additional wild collected Picassos into our breeding program.  Most Picasso clowns in the industry can be traced back to ORA’s breeding program. These beautiful fish exhibit extra white mainly on their center stripe. Each individual fish is unique and hand-selected by our experienced graders. These fish are graded on the amount of white present, the oddness of the striping, and the rarity of the markings. Our fish may be radically marked on one side and merely have an extra blob of white on the other.

ORA Premium Snowflakes are an especially striking form of A. ocellaris. They have an impressive amount of irregular white markings on the body. The edges of the white coloration will typically be jagged and angular. These elegant fish are carefully selected by our experienced graders and are available in extremely limited quantities. Just as their name implies – no two are alike. Often, as they mature, the edges of their white markings will develop a delicate baby blue hue worthy of their elite status. This popular clownfish was originally produced by Tropical Marine Centre in the UK around 1999. At that time it was considered an undesirable trait. TMC had two, completely normal looking pairs of Ocellaris that produced two or three snowflakes once every couple of spawns. These pairs are still alive and reproducing today but they no longer produce Snowflakes. Only around 100 of these fish were ever exported to the United States making F1 Broodstock direct from TMC extremely rare. ORA obtained it’s first pair of F1 Snowflakes in 2005 and we have been working on developing a hardier and more colorful strain of this glorious clownfish ever since.

Perculas or True Perculas are some of the most classic and popular clownfish species we offer. These docile fish are close relatives of the False Percula (A. ocellaris), and the two species can be easily confused. Both species have orange bodies with three white stripes. In the Percula, the black margin around the white stripes is thick while in the False Percula, the black margin is very thin or absent. They also have a different number of spiny rays in the dorsal fin. These two species do not overlap in their natural distribution. A. percula is found only in Melanesia and Northern Australia. Mature specimens typically develop a striking black coloration between stripes. Perculas will typically spawn only about once a month with 300 to 600 eggs per spawn.
