Created by blending all the best traits of an ORA Snowflake with an ORA Gladiator, our Frostbites have some beautiful and distinct features. Typically these fish will have a dark black trim around vibrant orange faces and tails. As they mature, they develop a frosty blue hue around the borders of their white flanks. A widely variable feature of our Frostbites is the number of spots or “buckshot”, some fish may have several while others may have none.

Gold Stripe Maroon Clown

Currently unavailable

Notify when available
$24.49

All of the Maroon Clownfish sold at ORA are of the gold stripe variety. Normally, Maroon Clownfish vary in color from bright red to dark maroon with three narrow white stripes. The fish found in the area of Sumatra have gold colored stripes, and the ORA broodstock comes from this area. The gold color of the stripes typically does not develop until the fish are about 9 – 12 months old. ORA fish are shipped at about 6-7 months, so they are showing the juvenile white stripes. They will develop the gold color in time, starting with the head stripe. These very popular fish are easy to keep in aquariums, although they do not get along with each other. Unless a hobbyist can get a mated pair, it is best to keep them one to a tank. It has been observed that the gold stripe variety seems a little less aggressive than the White Striped variety. This is one of the largest clownfish species, adult females can attain a size of over 6 inches. This is a very long lived fish, ORA has had pairs that spawned for more than 35 years. With the aggressive female guarding her nest, and her much smaller male mate fanning the eggs, Maroon Clownfish have some of the largest spawns ever recorded for clownfish. Typical spawns may contain 1,500 eggs, and spawns of over 6,000 have been observed. This species also seems the most likely to show misbars, and has a higher percentage of incomplete striping than other species.

Gulf Killifish

$6.49

Although the species is relatively drab for the majority of the year, breeding males are brilliant.  They are deep blue dorsally, and have blue median fins with light blue spots and yellow-orange margins.  Some males develop orange-red anal fins with red spots; paired fins are also yellow-orange with red spots on the pectoral fin. Fresh and brackish waters from northeastern Florida to Key West and northern Gulf of Mexico to Cuba. Primarily estuarine, the killifishes (Cyprinodontidae) are inshore fishes associated with a variety of low-salinity habitats (including marshes, seagrass beds, oyster, etc.).  However, most killifish species have wide salinity tolerances, and can sometimes be found in habitats ranging from hypersaline tidal pools to freshwater reaches.  The Gulf killifish is no exception, and can tolerate wide variances in salinity.

Lightning Maroon Clownfish

Currently unavailable

Notify when available
$28.99

The Lightning Maroon is one of the most exciting naturally occurring designer clownfish to be discovered since the Picasso Percula of the early 2000s. These fish develop extraordinary stripes that seem to spill over their sides like lightning bolts. Their stripes are highly variable and can take on any number of attractive formations. As the fish matures and becomes darker in color, these patterns will also change and become more visually striking. The Lightning Maroon clownfish stem from the geographically distinct White Stripe variety of Premnas biaculeatus. Maroon clownfish females can reach sizes up to 6 inches! This is a fish best kept singly or in pairs with a dramatic size difference between the individuals.

Mandarin Fish

Mandarin fish are reef dwellers, preferring sheltered lagoons and inshore reefs. While they are slow-moving and fairly common within their range, they are not easily seen due to their bottom-feeding habit and their small size (reaching only about 6 cm). They feed primarily on small crustaceans and other invertebrates. Based on the gut analyses of 7 wild fish Sadovy et al. (2001) determined that the mandarinfish has a mixed diet that consists of harpacticoid copepodspolychaete worms, small gastropodsgammaridean amphipodsfish eggs and ostracods. In the wild, feeding is continuous during daytime; the fish peck selectively at small prey trapped on coral substrate. We offer a continuous automatic live food source for you and your new Mandarin.

Despite their popularity in the aquarium trade, mandarin fish are considered difficult to keep, as their feeding habits are very specific. Some fish never adapt to aquarium life, refusing to eat anything but liveamphipods and copepods (as in the wild or from FloridaPets.com); though individuals that do acclimatize to aquarium food are considered to be quite hardy and highly resistant to diseases such as marine ich. They are less likely to contract marine ich because they do not have the typical skin type that is affected by this disease. Mandarin fish also have a layer of smelly and bitter slime instead of scales, which blocks out disease and also discourages predators.

The Midnight Clownfish is a Black Ocellaris clownfish with no stripes. This gorgeous natural mutation was discovered in ORA’s grow-out systems and was selectively bred over the past several years. These fish are quite rare, only a handful are found in every spawn. Just as with the natural Black Ocellaris, the Midnights start out life with an orange color that turns black as they age. Some of them morph into completely black adults and others retain a bit of orange on their face.

Mojarra

In stock

$9.99

Mojarra, any of approximately 40 species of fishes in the family Gerreidae (order Perciformes), found in marine environments in most warm regions of the world. Brackish habitats or fresh water are entered on occasion by some species. Mojarras are silvery fishes with compressed bodies; they are distinguished by their highly protrusible mouths, with the opened jaws forming an extended tube. Although their maximum length is about 14 inches, most species of mojarra do not attain lengths greater than 10 inches. The spotfin mojarra (Eucinostomus argenteus), which is one of the most widespread species, occurs along the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Pacific coasts of North America, even entering freshwater habitats in the lower reaches of river systems.
